Good habits form just as easy as bad habits | Willem Gous

Good habits form just as easy as bad habits

Your habits determine your eventual success. Read any story about success and you will see consistency, habits of success, doing the right thing every day for a long time. However, we are held back by habits that work against our success. Watching TV, sleeping in, having a chocolate instead of a salad, rather going to a party than reading a book about sales and marketing. I have done all of these. However, good habits can form just as easily as bad habits and I am proof of this. I used to smoke 5 packs a day. Yes, you read right, 100 cigarettes a day. I woke up one morning and I put it down and have been clean for 23 years. I am married to one of the South Africa’s top confectionary chefs, yet I have been off sugar for two and a half years.  I mean, one morning last year I woke up with 800 small mini chocolate cakes in my house. EVERYTHING in the house smelled like chocolate. Now I am not some super human, I use a process. Bad habits are easy, you can easily justify the smooth, rich taste of a chocolate. You go to the party because you worked hard, and you earned some time off and you NEED it.  We easily stack up the reasons why we can and should do a bad habit. But when it comes to a “good” habit we suddenly struggle and hit writers block as to why this is good for us. My smoking, I imagined suffocating to death over a period of a few years because of emphysema. That got me from smoking 100 to zero I a few seconds flat. I love suits, I love nice clothes and without sugar I will have a constant weight making dressing easy while saving me money. One day I decided to stop sugar and that was the day I started. I have good enough reasons. I had more benefits than drawbacks to form the good habit. You only see a good habit as difficult because you don’t see ALL the benefits. Sit down, think and write down what you will gain. If you struggle, do 10 benefits for 10 days. You will have 100 reasons why it benefits you to form the good habit. Focus on the STRONG reasons and benefits first, like I did with emphysema. Then I focused on the bad breath, the smelly clothes, standing outside in winter to smoke etc. If you could form a good habit today, what would it be? How will it benefit you now and in the future?
