5 lies small business owners tell themselves [Video included]

I have been a small business owner since 1999 and working with other small business owners I can tell you with absolute authority that we lie to ourselves. We BS ourselves into failure sometimes.

If you tell yourself any of these lies then I suggest going to see your small business coach.

#1. All I need is more money

Bwahahahahaah! That is funny. NO, you do not more money. 99% of the time that money would be to cover for cashflow mismanagement or just keeping the business afloat. The money is NOT going to be used to grow the small business and anybody borrowing that money to you will be financing desperation. If and when you borrow money, be sure you know how it will grow the company and pay itself back. If you can’t pay it back today, you won’t be able to pay it back tomorrow.

#2. This will never fail

If you think your business idea will never fail then you have failed already. EVERYTHING, I mean EVERYTHING in this world has positives and negatives. Believing something is ONLY good and perfect is just plain stupid. Call a buddy, call a coach, get them to help you see the imperfections in your plan. That way you will grow, survive and possibly thrive.

#3. Working harder will fix the problem

I have tried it, it did not work. It is like automating a crap process. Automating it only makes it produce more crap more quickly. If it is not working, stop working and think why it is not working. Find the problem.

#4. What competition?

I am the only “guy” on the block. Nope Nigel. You are not. If there are no competitors then there is no market and no money. Pray and hope for competition because it means there is a market, there is money and believe it or not, your competitors shape you into a better business as you compete for customers. If you don’t have competitors, drop to the floor and pray for some.

#5. If I do this myself I will save money

I really hate working with these people. They ALWAYS try do stuff by themselves to save a buck here and there. But they never save money because they never make money. Why? Because this approach is like trying to win Nascar by driving the WHOLE race in first gear. You are moving, but slowly. You are making a lot of noise but gaining very little. Eventually you will burn out. In the beginning you WILL have to do a lot yourself, but sooner, rather than later, get people to do low income work so you can focus on the high income work.
